Technical Development Case Studies

Metabolix, Inc.

Metabolix is biomaterials company that specializes in the manufacture of novel polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) polymers. Trade named Mirel, the PHA polymer is 100% biosynthetic and biodegradable. Presently the polymer is used in films, extruded sheet and injection molding. Provided a market opportunity assessment for PHA in the fiber and nonwovens market space, and a thorough patent analysis that in conjunction with appropriate legal council was used to assess freedom to operate and prior art in nonwovens. Metabolix has a large patent estate with over 100 in-force patents. Conducted the initial development work to assess the suitability of PH for fiber extrusion. Explored three different extrusion processes that were consistent with future market opportunities.

Robertson Fuel Systems, LLC

Robertson Fuels Systems is a leader in the manufacture of crashworthy fuel systems for the military. Played a lead material science role in concept development, prototype development and scale-up of a novel survivable fuel system for ground-based military vehicles. The product is an elastomeric composite that is designed to absorb blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and to self-seal if penetrated. Defined and develop the appropriate materials for the fuel system in conjunction with the client. Participated extensively on the development team to design a new process to manufacture the above product. Provided an Intellectual Property (IP) assessment to develop a comprehensive IP strategy for the technologies, including the assessment of multiple article, composition of matter and process inventions. Currently providing ongoing material science technical support.

Synthetic Turf Council

The Synthetic Turf Council is the trade association for the billion-dollar synthetic turf industry. In 2008, the industry experienced significant pressure when it was discovered that synthetic turf contains high levels of lead. Provided technical leadership in the resolution of this highly-publicized trade issue. Interacted with numerous local, state and regulatory agencies and served as the subject matter expert for media over a two-year period to define and resolve the industry issue. During that time, provided leadership to coordinate a team of independent toxicologists and epidemiologists to conduct independent research, assess toxicity, exposure mechanisms and potential health effects.

AstroTurf, LLC

Provide ongoing technical development and support to one of the country’s largest synthetic turf companies. Developed a novel approach to reduce heat build-up in turf associated with radiant heat from the sun. Assessed multiple technical approaches and worked with an internal team to optimize selected technology. Provided assistance in the establishment of a turf research center with the University of Tennessee. Designed, developed, fabricated and patented a mechanical athlete that will be used to evaluate field performance and safety across multiple test installations. Provided an independent assessment of adhesives and seaming techniques used to install synthetic turf; those recommendations led to a modification of standard approaches to installation.

ForeverLawn, LLC

Collaborate on an ongoing basis with ForeverLawn, a leading synthetic grass company that licenses their brand and sells turf for residential and commercial landscape to their dealer network. Identify and develop new product opportunities and provide ongoing technical support. Recently developed synthetic turf for playgrounds that has permanent and durable antistatic properties, which improves the playing quality for kids.

State of California, Cal Recycle

Recently engaged to work with the prime contractor, SAIC, to conduct a market assessment to identify and prioritize market opportunities for recycled tires. Tasked to work with the existing feedstock industry to develop industry wide standards.

Proctor and Gamble

Engaged to evaluate and recommend manufacturing options for a manufacturing line to produce feminine protection products. In addition, provided technical assessment of tampon construction and performance for a civil case involving a competitive product.

Disney World

Worked with Disney World to test and evaluate appearance retention performance of a prototypical flooring product. Project encompassed the installation of a test floor in a selected high traffic area, ongoing monitoring of appearance retention using colorimetric analysis and the evaluation and reporting of data and results.

EmFinders

EmFinders offers a device that, when worn like a watch, provides a location service for people with disabilities or illnesses who may wander and need assistance. Conceptualized, designed and developed prototypical watch bands that cannot be removed by the wearer, yet can be easily removed by an attendant. The work was completed in less than six months. As a result, the EmSeeQ Secure band is now marketed and sold online as well as through hospitals, doctors and clinics.
